To celebrate the launch of ZapWorks Studio 6, we’ve teamed up with gin connoisseurs, Sipsmith to launch a one-off AR competition.
Zappar and Sipsmith are two brands that have very unique approaches to what they create - stand-out products and stand-out content (or ingredients!). Innovation and creativity are at the heart of what we do, and with 2019 being Sipsmith’s 10 year anniversary we could think of no better way to bring their story to life than to challenge the creative community to build a mind-blowing AR experience that embodies the Sipsmith brand and their craftsmanship for superior gin.
The brief
The story of Sipsmith and its London origins is key to the brand and remains prominent across all of their product packaging. Sipsmith is adding value to its brand by providing innovative ways for customers to experience their collection of gins across retail, events, and online.
Sipsmith’s brand is built around craftsmanship, quality, and innovation. To coincide with their 10 year anniversary, Sipsmith is looking for a new way to reach more Millennials and Gen Z’s and get them trying more gin (responsibly, of course).
Creative challenge
Using face tracking and world tracking in ZapWorks Studio you’ll need to distill the essence of the Sipsmith brand into a short, punchy AR experience that tickles the taste buds and gets people coming back for more.
Activated from a bottleneck tie on their flagship London Dry Gin, you’ll need to think creatively about the context and content of the experience. Be sure to think deeply about the types of environments the campaign will be experienced in as well as ensuring it’s in-line with the Sipsmith brand.
Utilizing Studio 6’s new world tracking and face tracking functionality, you’ll have the ability to create something truly unique - maybe you’ll create an AR portal into the Sipsmith distillery, or create a Sipsmith-themed face filter that incorporates all of the best ingredients and botanicals that make up every Sipsmith gin.

Target audience
Sipsmith is looking to reach a younger audience of discerning drinkers, aged between 18 - 35 yrs.
Objectives
To help Sipsmith introduce and engage new audiences, communicating their brand values and story in an engaging manner. (You'll need to develop your experience with scans and dwell time in mind).
- Surprise and delight customers post-purchase
- Add additional value to the Sipsmith brand
- Engage a younger demographic
KPIs
- Scans - the amount of times the experience is accessed
- Dwell time - the amount of time users spend with the experience
Placement & activation
The winning experience will be activated from a bottleneck tie on Sipsmith’s flagship London Dry Gin, using the free to download Zappar app. The bottleneck tie will be placed on bottles disseminated throughout their UK retail network.
With this in mind entrants should consider:
- Content - ensure it’s on brand and utilizes the Sipsmith asset pack
- Context - think about where the experience is likely to be activated (supermarkets, off-licenses etc. )
- Corporate Responsibility - be sure it adheres to advertising standards for the responsible communication of alcohol to over 18s

What should you create?
Sipsmith is challenging you to bring their story to life, in an engaging, innovative and immersive way that enhances their current branding and effectively tells the Sipsmith story.
Example experiences
Here are some example experiences to get you thinking:
- An animated, face-tracked experience that utilizes the Sipsmith brand (imagine botanicals, Juniper berries animating off someone’s face with a social share mechanic
- A mini-game experience with a competition mechanic educating users on the Sipsmith gin making process.
- Gin inspired cocktail experience using existing recipes on the Sipsmith site to blend the perfect hand-crafted cocktail.
- A world tracked experience, creating a portal into the Sipsmith distillery, allowing users to tour the distillery from their smartphones
Prize
Not only will the winning entrant receive a cash prize of £10,000 but will also work with Sipsmith on implementing the final experience on their flagship London Dry bottles found in supermarkets across the UK.

Who is the competition for?
At Zappar we’re always looking to inspire and challenge the creative community, naturally, this means that if you’re an existing ZapWorks user, or completely new to the ZapWorks platform (but have been creating AR experiences in other software) the competition is a great opportunity for you to have your work published and experienced at the highest level.

For the Sipsmith competition, you’ll be required to build experience in ZapWorks Studio, utilizing some of the new features in Studio 6.

Criteria for judging
Submissions will be judged on the quality of the entry and how skillfully the entrant researches and brings the Sipsmith brand to life. The winning entry will be the one that showcases both creative flair and technical ability.
You will not need to submit a fully-formed experience to qualify. For the purpose of the initial round of judging, your project will just need to showcase the key features of your AR experience - you are welcome to use concepts, wireframes and explanatory text to showcase how your experience would progress, given additional time and support from Zappar and Sipsmith.
Your submission will be judged on:
- A well-defined vision for your AR experience - this does not need to be feature-complete and can include concept work to demonstrate how your work would progress with access to additional time and support
- The transition between the target image (bottleneck tie) and the environment - world tracked, face tracked or 360 Gyro
- UX - how well is the experience signposted?
- UI - how well are UI elements designed?
- How well the experience tells the Sipsmith brand story (hint do your research into the brand)
- Entertainment value
- Educational value
- Complexity - how far it pushes the ZapWorks feature set
- Polish - SFX, nice animations, target events
- Context - demonstrating that the scanning environment of the user is taken into account
- Assets - the quality of 3D models, 2D images, UI and 360 environments
Bonus points for:
- Create multiple scenes or environments that the end user can switch between
- Showcasing the Sipsmith brand in a unique or innovative way
- Adding tappable hotspots to display additional information
- Social share functionality
- Documenting your progress in a WIP (Work In Progress) topic on the ZapWorks forum

Qualifying Entrants
- The competition is only open to ZapWorks users who are aged 18 or over. If you are under the age of 18 you must not enter the competition. Proof of identity and age may be required as a condition of entry and before claiming any prize.
- The competition is not directed to persons under the age of 18, or to citizens of countries or states where its promotion or operation is illegal or unlawful, and such persons are not eligible to enter. Competition entries are void where prohibited by your country of residence. We also reserve the right to disqualify any entrant if we have reasonable grounds to believe the entrant has breached any of these terms & conditions.
- The competition is not open to Zappar or Sipsmith staff or family members.
Entry Requirements
- If you’re using a ZapWorks personal account and you’ve already used your five free codes you will need to purchase an additional zapcode to enter the competition.
- You are free to enter as many times as you wish, but please be aware that only one of your entries will be considered for the competition. If you submit more than one experience please specify which experience you’d like to be considered for the competition.
- You will need to submit your ZPP file.
- Prize winners are responsible for expenses and arrangements not specifically included in the prizes, including any necessary travel documents (e.g. tickets), passports and visas, and accommodation.
Ownership of Winning Experience
- The winning experience will be the sole and exclusive property of Sipsmith to be used and repurposed as they wish on a royalty-free basis and without the obligation to provide any attribution to the creator.
- The 1st prize winner and finalists will be asked to sign a written assignment which assigns all copyright and other rights in their experience to Sipsmith on a worldwide basis. This may include a waiver of moral rights, including the right to be identified as the author of the work.
Prizes
There are six prizes to be won. These are as follows:
1st prize

*5 x finalists will get a half-day AR workshop with Zappar at their HQ in Chiswick (date TBC) plus the following:

*Currency conversion rates will be finalized on the day of transfer and are at the discretion of Zappar. The full cash prize amount will be paid into the beneficiaries bank account within 30 days of the competition close date
No cash or other alternatives will be offered for the free ZapBox, workshops, ZapWorks Pro Annual seat, or Sipsmith sipping society membership. Prizes are not transferable to another individual.
*The 5x finalists will be required to pay any travel & subsistence costs incurred getting to and from the half-day workshop held at Zappar HQ in Chiswick, London.

The competition starts on Wednesday 1st May 2019
- Your competition entry must be submitted by 23:59 UK Time (BST) on Sunday 14th July 2019 on the following page: https://zap.works/competitions/sipsmith . Entries received after the closing date will be disqualified.
Rules relating to Competition Entries
- The winner (1st place) and finalists will be selected and announced on W/c August 5th, 2019 on Zappar’s web properties (www.zappar.com, zap.works, docs.zap.works, my.zap.works & forum.zap.works), social channels and email newsletter as well as Sipsmith’s web properties.. Winners will, in the first instance, be contacted via email.
- If a prize winner cannot be contacted or is unable to comply with these terms & conditions, we reserve the right to re-allocate the prize.
Entries will be judged on the following criteria:
- The transition between the target image (bottleneck tie) and the environment - world tracked, face tracked or 360 Gyro
- UX - how well is the experience signposted
- UI - how well are UI elements designed
- How well the experience tells the Sipsmith brand story (hint do your research into the brand)
- Entertainment value
- Educational value
- Complexity - how far it pushes the ZapWorks feature set
- Polish - SFX, nice animations, target events
- Context - clear thought into where the experience will be activated
- Assets - the quality of 3D models, 2D images and UI
Bonus points will be awarded for:
- Narrative structure - how effectively the experience tells a story
- Including a call to action somewhere in the experience
- Documenting your progress in a WIP (Work In Progress) topic on the forum
Additional points:
- Prize winners will be chosen by a panel of judges. In all matters, the decision of the judges will be final and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into.
- Non-prize winning Entrants will retain the copyright in their competition submission. Prize winners will be required to assign the copyright in their competition submission to Sipsmith.
- By submitting your entry you consent that Zappar can use your entry in perpetuity for marketing and PR purposes on:
- Zappar’s web properties, social channels, and print collateral
- 3rd party sites
- Anywhere on the web that’s not listed above - The experience must be your own original work. Entrants are NOT allowed to use 3rd party content without a license.
- Zappar is not legally responsible for users that submit work without consent from all relevant 3rd parties.
- You must have obtained any and all consents, approvals or licenses required for you to submit the experience.
- The experience may not include any third-party trademarks (logos, names) or copyrighted materials (music, images, video, recognizable people) unless you have obtained the explicit permission to use the materials.
- You should only use elements in your entry that have documented features on the ZapWorks documentation site.
- You are responsible for the cost (if any) of creating your competition entry and sending it to us, as well as all other costs associated with participation in the competition.
- Entrants cannot ask for help with their competition entry from Zappar employees.
- All entrants must have a ZapWorks account and access to the internet.
- Entrants may use the Sipsmith neck tag supplied in the assets pack for reference only. The neck tag is subject to change once the winning experience has been selected.
Winning entrant
- If you’re selected as the winning entrant you’ll be required to provide at your own cost additional edits and amends to your final experience on behalf of Sipsmith.
- As the winner, you’ll be expected to travel at your own cost to the Sipsmith offices in Chiswick, London to meet the team and finalize your winning experience with the Sipsmith team.
Liability
- Zappar does not accept any liability for any damage, loss, injury or disappointment suffered by any entrant entering the competition or as a result of accepting any prize. Zappar is not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer on-line systems, servers, or providers, computer equipment or software, failure of any email or entry to be received on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet, telephone lines or at any web site, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to entrant's or any other person's computer or mobile telephone related to or resulting from participation in the competition. Nothing shall exclude Zappar’s liability for death or personal injury as a result of its negligence, or for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation.
- Zappar does not accept any responsibility for the winning experience after it has been selected and passed onto Sipsmith for review.
Data Protection Notice
- When you enter the competition will collect some personal information from you. If you are the 1st prize winner or a finalist we may collect further information from you. The information collected may include your name, your email address, home address and your date of birth. If we do not collect some or all of this information we may not be able to accept your competition entry or provide the prizes.
- We collect this information for the purposes of our legitimate interests of administering the competition and fulfilling the prizes.
- We may need to share some of your personal information with Sipsmith and the competition judges for the purposes described in these terms & conditions; specifically judging competition entries, announcing the winners, contacting the winners and fulfilling the prizes.

Consent to Publicity
By entering the competition, you give your consent that Zappar may publish you as a winner on the Zappar website(s), Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, and in our email newsletter; Zappar will publish your name along with details of your winning entry. You also give your consent that Sipsmith may publish you as a winner on their web properties. Sipsmith will publish your name along with details of your winning entry.
Jurisdiction
- The competition and these terms & conditions will be governed by English law and any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England.
